Quick Summary
- Red status means your iqama is flagged and blocked in the Saudi government system
- You cannot renew, travel, work legally or conduct official transactions while red
- 5 main causes: expired iqama, Huroob, unpaid fines, employer block, iqama cancelled
- Check your status on Absher or Muqeem.sa to confirm it is red
- Resolution time varies: 24 hours to 6 months depending on the cause
- Act immediately — every day of delay adds fines and makes resolution harder
What Does Red and Green Iqama Status Mean?
When you check your iqama on Absher or Muqeem you will see a colour indicator showing your current status. Understanding what each colour means is the first step.
Green Status — All Good
- Iqama is valid and active
- No blocks or violations
- Free to travel with valid exit visa
- Can renew iqama normally
- Can transfer sponsorship
- All government transactions open
Red Status — Action Required
- Iqama is blocked or flagged
- Cannot renew iqama
- Cannot exit Saudi Arabia
- Cannot work legally
- Cannot transfer sponsorship
- Official transactions blocked
How to Check Your Iqama Status
Before taking any action confirm your status is actually red through an official platform:
- Absher app — My Services → Residency → Iqama Status. Most up-to-date real-time check. Requires Saudi SIM for OTP login.
- Muqeem.sa — Enter your iqama number and Hijri date of birth. No Saudi SIM needed. Works from any country.
- Jawazat office — Visit in person with your iqama and passport for a direct government check.
5 Causes of Red Status — And How to Fix Each One
The most important step is identifying the exact cause of your red status. Each cause has a completely different resolution process. Check your Absher status details carefully — it usually shows the reason for the block.
Expired Iqama — Most Common Cause
Your iqama has passed its expiry date and has not been renewed. This is the most common cause of red status and is entirely your employer's responsibility to fix. A fine of SAR 100 per day accumulates from the expiry date — also the employer's legal obligation to pay.
Huroob (Absconding) Report Filed by Employer
Your employer has filed a Huroob report against you through Absher Business. This immediately flags your iqama red and blocks all transactions. Huroob can be filed legitimately (genuine absence) or falsely (retaliation for complaints or transfer requests).
Unpaid Traffic Fines or Government Penalties
Outstanding traffic violations, Absher-linked fines or other government penalties linked to your iqama number can trigger a red status block. Saudi traffic violations accumulate in the MOI system against your iqama — even if the vehicle belongs to your employer.
Employer Administrative Block
Your employer can place an administrative block on your iqama through their Absher Business portal for certain reasons — including suspected violations, disciplinary matters or disputes. This is different from Huroob but has similar consequences for your iqama status.
Iqama Cancelled by Employer
Your employer has cancelled your iqama sponsorship through the MOI system. This is the most serious cause — it means you no longer have valid residency in Saudi Arabia. This can happen legitimately at end of employment or illegally as retaliation.
General Step-by-Step to Fix Red Status
Regardless of the specific cause follow this general process first to identify and begin resolving the issue:
Check Absher for the Specific Reason
Log into Absher and check your iqama status details. Absher usually shows a brief reason for the red status — expired, blocked, Huroob, cancelled. Note the exact reason shown as this determines your next action.
Contact Your Employer HR in Writing Immediately
Send an email or WhatsApp to HR explaining your iqama is showing red status and requesting urgent resolution. Include the date you discovered it and the reason shown on Absher. Written communication creates the evidence trail you may need later.
Check and Pay Any Outstanding Traffic Fines
Even if you believe the red status is from another cause — check traffic fines first. They are the quickest to resolve. Go to Absher → Traffic Services → My Violations and pay any outstanding amounts immediately.
File HRSD Complaint if Employer is Uncooperative
If HR does not respond within 48 hours or refuses to cooperate file a complaint at hrsd.gov.sa or call HRSD on 19911. Clearly state your iqama is red, the reason shown and that your employer is not taking action. HRSD treats urgent iqama cases seriously.
Monitor Absher Daily Until Green Confirmed
Check your Absher status every day after taking action. Do not assume it is resolved until the indicator shows green. Take a screenshot when it returns to green as proof and do not attempt to travel until you have personally confirmed green status on Absher.
How Long Does It Take to Fix?
The resolution time depends entirely on the cause:
What You Cannot Do While Iqama Is Red
| Action | Possible While Red? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Renew iqama | No | Must resolve red status first |
| Travel outside Saudi Arabia | No — high risk | May be stopped at airport immigration |
| Work legally for new employer | No | No employer can process iqama while red |
| Transfer sponsorship | No | Qiwa blocks transfers on red iqamas |
| Open bank account | No | Banks verify iqama status |
| Renew driving licence | No | Muroor checks iqama status |
| Check status on Absher/Muqeem | Yes | Always check first to confirm cause |
| File HRSD complaint | Yes | Critical step — file immediately |
Fines That Accumulate While Red
If your iqama is red because it has expired — or if it expires while another issue is being resolved — an overstay fine accumulates at SAR 100 per day. This is the employer's legal responsibility under Saudi Labour Law, not yours — but employers sometimes try to pass it to employees.

Calculate Fine — FreeIf You Are Outside Saudi Arabia With Red Status
If you discover your iqama is red while you are outside Saudi Arabia the situation is more complicated — but still resolvable.
- Do not attempt to board a flight to Saudi Arabia until you have confirmed your status is green on Absher — you may be denied entry
- Contact HR immediately by phone and email explaining your iqama is red while you are abroad
- Contact your embassy in Saudi Arabia for assistance if the employer is unresponsive
- File an HRSD complaint online at hrsd.gov.sa — you can do this from any country
- Check Muqeem.sa daily to monitor whether your status changes to green without needing Absher access
- If the red status is from an expired iqama your employer must renew it remotely — this is possible through the Jawazat system without you being in Saudi Arabia

Frequently Asked Questions
My iqama just expired — is that why it is showing red?
Yes — an expired iqama automatically shows as red on Absher. Contact your employer HR department immediately and request urgent iqama renewal. Your employer submits the renewal through Absher Business or Muqeem. Once renewed the status returns to green usually within 3 to 10 working days. The SAR 100/day overstay fine is legally your employer's responsibility — not yours.
Can I leave Saudi Arabia while my iqama is red?
In most cases no — red status blocks your exit through official channels. You may be stopped at immigration. The safest approach is to resolve the red status before booking any flights. Do not attempt to leave on a red iqama. Monitor Absher until it shows green then book your travel.
My employer placed a block on my iqama. What are my rights?
An employer can place a block for legitimate administrative reasons but cannot use it as a punishment or threat tool. If the block was placed because you filed a labour complaint or requested a sponsorship transfer — that is retaliatory and illegal. File an HRSD complaint immediately at hrsd.gov.sa citing retaliatory employer block. HRSD can investigate and order its removal.
I paid my traffic fines but my iqama is still red. Why?
After paying traffic fines it can take 24 to 48 hours for the MOI system to update and reflect the green status on Absher. Wait the full 48 hours and check again. If still red after 48 hours there may be a second cause — your iqama may also be expired or have a Huroob or employer block that needs separate resolution. Check Absher carefully for any additional status flags.
Is the SAR 100/day overstay fine my responsibility or my employer's?
Under Saudi Labour Law the iqama renewal is the employer's legal responsibility. Therefore the SAR 100/day overstay fine for an expired iqama is legally the employer's responsibility — not yours. Some employers try to pass this cost to employees — if they do raise it formally in writing and if they deduct it from your salary file an HRSD complaint citing illegal salary deduction.
How do I know which specific cause is making my iqama red?
Log into Absher and check your iqama status details — it usually shows a brief reason such as "Expired," "Huroob," "Block" or "Cancelled." If the reason is not clear visit a Jawazat office in person with your iqama and passport — they can tell you the exact cause from the MOI system. Knowing the exact cause is essential before taking any action.
My iqama was cancelled by my employer without telling me. What do I do?
An employer cancelling your iqama without notice or consent is a serious violation. File an HRSD complaint immediately at hrsd.gov.sa. Contact your home country embassy in Saudi Arabia for diplomatic assistance. You are still entitled to your EOSB and full final settlement regardless of how the cancellation occurred — calculate what you are owed using our EOSB Calculator and include it in your HRSD complaint.
